9:00AM TO 3:30PM

A Peek into Little Mojave Cottage Days...

Little ones arrive with their parents and say hello to friends as they walk up to the cottage. They are greeted by their teacher with a hug then place their belongings in their designated spots. Off they go to join in the play for the morning. Parents briefly mingle warmly with one another before leaving us to our “good work”..

Each day follows a rhythm which is held by the teacher and allows the children to move in a natural way with “in breaths” and “out breaths”. In breaths are invitations for children to focus their will, for example; working with their hands for craft or sitting still and listening to story. Out breaths are times when the children are in relaxation with a sense of freedom, for example; open-ended play.

After morning play, the children gather for circle time. Gently called from their world of imagination with song, children tidy up their “good work” and join together under the scrub oak. This is a time for “rising with the sun”, “singing with our hearts”, “giving with our hands”, and blessing the day we will share with one another.

Circle time is followed by an all organic shared snack.  We open snack time with a spirit of service. Each child waits with anticipation for their turn to contribute by gently setting the table in pairs. Once the table is set and each child is served their food, we call in our candle’s flame with a verse and bless our food with song.

Snack time is followed by hand work. Depending on the day, this may look like color theory exploration with watercolor, form drawing with beeswax crayons, form molding with beeswax, or nature crafting.

After handwork, depending on the season, we take a hike or work in the garden and enjoy free play in nature. We finish this time with guided movement; from Five Rhythms dancing, to Qi Gong, to group games.

Lunch time is followed by story time. Story time is often told by heart to invite children to form mental images of the story being told. This offers an experience rich in imagination while honing important skills which form the building blocks for reading.

After lunch time, we rest. Taking this time for inner quiet is essential as, in stillness, children are able integrate the learning and experiences of the day. During this time, older children rest in the form of meditative "sit spots" while, separately, little ones get a full rest on cozy cots.

After rest, children pack their things and finish the day with open-ended play as parents arrive to take them home for the day.
